Day Trips from Daejeon

The city's backyard mountain is a ridge of granite peaks, Buddhist hermitages and azalea fields 30 minutes from the centre. Trails range from a gentle 2-hour circuit to the tooth-like summit of Gwaneumbong (846 m), enough elevation for views across Daejeon's high-rise cluster but still forgiving if you're nursing a soju headache.

A former Baekje capital pressed between Gyeryongsan and the Geum River. The fortress wall climbs a forested hill above tiled hanok cafés, while the royal tombs inside the modern museum let you stare down into a 1,500-year-old stone burial chamber without breaking a sweat.

Baekje's last capital: lotus ponds, a cliff-top temple site and a tiny ferry to a river island crowned with a 5-storey stone pagoda. The village lanes still sell lotus-leaf rice wraps the way court cooks did centuries ago.

A granite dam holds back Korea's largest inland reservoir ringed by bike paths, pine arboretums and a surprising modern art park. You can pedal the 80 km shoreline if you're keen, or just ride the eastern 20 km section and catch the water-bus back.

The country's biggest ginseng auction starts at dawn, smelling of earth and licorice. After watching wholesalers haggle, head 20 minutes up the valley for a river hike that ends at a chestnut-roasting café.

A pine-fringed island reached by Korea's longest bridge. At low tide you can walk 2 km on firm sand collecting clams. Two hours later the same spot is underwater. Adjacent orchards sell seedless tangerines you can bag for the bus ride home.
